Facts:

Mr. Rene Van Weijemberg, a Belgian citizen and a friend of the respondent was arrested by the Police and his shipping documents seized. The respondent instructed the appellant, a legal practitioner, to secure the release of Mr. Van Weijemberg and his documents. Mr. Van Weijemberg was released on his own cognisance before the appellant could take any steps. The appellant, however, secured the release of the shipping documents. Subsequently,

the appellant forwarded a bill of charges in the sum of $300,000 in respect of the services
rendered to the respondent’s friend. The respondent did not pay the appellant’s fees, and the appellant, as plaintiff, instituted an action at the High Court to recover
his fees. The fees charged by the appellant ostensibly arose from the fact that the appellant was to issue gratification to the Police. The trial court dismissed the
action on the ground that the claim was tainted with illegality
